iPhone in Australia: Telstra?

without comments

There has been a lot of chatter in various forums regarding who will get the deal with Apple and when it will happen. The general consensus is that the iPhone will come to Australia when there is a 3G version… and its starting to look like Telstra might be the company they will deal with.

An article discovered by one of the Whirlpool denizens seems to suggest it… READ

Of particular interest to me was the following paragraph

But Telstra and Apple have been growing close. In August, ASX-listed Telstra reseller Fone Zone bought Australia’s largest network of Apple stores, Next Byte, followed by the purchase of Apple support and rentals business Frequency Communications in October.

Nextbyte and Frequency are the largest Apple resellers that I am aware of. I wonder if Mac1 will be next…

Fixed the iPhone

with one comment

I decided I should upgrade the firmware after all, as I really did not want to get left behind. Bricked on the first attempt… reflashed the baseband and “virginised” then upgraded to the next firmware version (1.1.1). FW 1.1.2 is out now, and apparently fixes the issue we have in Australia with voicemail not being notified by SMS. The only current solution to that is to check missed calls (which are correctly recorded) and then check voicemail once in a while.

Everything is working as it should at the present time, and I am hanging out for the hack to get my phone to 1.1.2 and I’ll probably stop after that (unless Apple release some must-have app for the phone… wifi iTunes was not it, for me)

Did I mention that I love my phone?

An iPhone on your Desktop? (OSX only)

without comments

If you are using VoIP via the SIP protocol, this is a VERY nice looking piece of software. I’ve been using both a hardware VoIP solution as well as a software one, (X-Lite) but the iSoftPhone GUI looks like an iphone, Apple addressbook is integrated so your contacts are automatically available, and it looks like it will be excellent.

I’m going to give it a trial, but the $75USD for a single licence, or $99 which includes 24 months (only!!!) upgrade protection is a little steep. That equates to $81 or $109 Aussie dollars and I’m afraid that I can’t see the real value when I can have X-Lite for free.

Still and all… It looks good.
