Macintosh Worm?

February 18, 2006 kyte 1 comment

Brian Krebs at the Washington Post and Red Herring report on the existence of a worm/trojan currently on OSX.

Well, maybe. Apparently there’s a jpg wandering about, supposedly sending itself via iChat to other iChat users, and its really a worm/trojan which doesnt do anything

I don’t know about you, but I dont accept any kind of file transfer from just anybody, and they usually alert me ahead of time when its going to happen.. for example if we are discussing a picture of some kind, and one’s chat partner says “wanna see?” and you agree… you still have to accept the transfer.

However, proof of concept is the word here, and we Mac users now need to be vigilant so that our computers don’t get compromised by what will inevitably follow this… the psychopaths are going to try to find a way to breach our security. Darnit.

a Multi-input touch screen. Who saw the screens in Minority Report? Seems like they aren’t that far off in the real world.

Things I have learned this month

February 9, 2006 kyte 5 comments

1. It actually IS possible to make huge sums of money online without spamming or nagging your friends to join up.
2. Its equally possible, even probable, that you will lose huge sums of money online because the methods of #1 make it so.
3. There are at least 15 different online payment processors of which PayPal is just one. Most will probably take your money and run, eventually (as Stormpay seems to have done this week)
4. People who do not live in the USA *can* get a US bank account without needing a Social Security number or a US mailing address. There are two wellknown financial institutions which offer the service, probably more.
5. I’m a glutton for punishment and will probably gamble my money again. Its as much game as poker or roulette. More like roulette, really.
6. Golden Rule: If you can’t afford to lose it, then don’t use it.
7. Added later: It works out way cheaper than Lotto.
