The Million Dollar Homepage

September 29, 2005 kyte Comments off

Sometimes, someone comes up with an idea which is entirely ingenious, and which ends up making them piles of cash.

The Million Dollar Homepage is such an idea. The lad is 21, and was just looking for a way to pay for his University years. He covered all of that in the first few days the site went live. The concept is simple, but oh so damned clever… buy a pixel on his front page for $1 (or buy as many as you like). So far he has sold over 205,000. Not bad going… and bloody good luck to him, wish I thought of it.

[Edit: I have closed comments for this post, and deleted the existing ones. It was beginning to attract the milliondollar wannabes and quite frankly I am not interested in providing free advertising for those who want to ride on the back of Alex's ingenuity and good fortune.]

Web Design Freebies

September 23, 2005 kyte 1 comment

For those who just can’t be fussed with all that web design hoo-haa and who just want something that works, without paying a fortune.

Ideal for static sites, the following two sites offer some fairly decent cookie-cutter templates. All you need do is write your content into the text areas provided. What those are should be very obvious.

1. TemplateBox
2. MasterTemplates

Both sites also offer free logo templates. These are all fairly decent and easy on the eye and very useable if you dont mind that 3 bazillion other people may be using the same template for their logo. Given that there are more websites going up every day, the chances of actually seeing your chosen templates anywhere else are pretty limited.

Free Stock Photos are a rarity indeed.

wordpress.com

Some time ago (and I don’t even remember when) I placed one of my other email addresses on a waiting list at WordPress.com to be given a blog on that domain. This morning, I received my invitation, and have taken it up. The lads have only just begun releasing invitations, a few a day, so if you want to be in on the early stuff, and have your own wordpress blog hosted at wordpress itself, get on over there and put your email into the invite slot, then sit back and wait.

The multi-user version is interesting, and different… I like it. If ever I decide to let this domain go, I think a hosted wordpress blog will suit me perfectly.

In the meantime, for those of you who remember mindlessblather.com (which, because it was so popular at the time, has now been swept up by one of those companies that SELLS domain names, dammit, I should have taken that spam mail seriously and got some cash for it) I am afraid that its unlikely I will make public its name or URL. This self needs to remain disconnected from that self.

Some people will be notified.

That is all.

Makes for very interesting reading. All those friends of mine who still want me to be tech support for their WinTel machines should read it from start to finish.

Mambo Open Source Development Team – Letter to the community

OpenSourceMatters – Mambo Open Source Development Team – Letter to the community

It seems there has been a parting of the ways between Miro, the nominal Mambo owners, and the development team, due to disagreements on how the software is presented to the community and the feeling that it was no longer open source.

It will be very interesting to observe the development of Mambo now that it is bereft of its original dev team, and what will happen with the new open source version, now named Joomla.

Watch that space, its lookin’ good.
